Recognizings other's struggles: Giving Advice


We often have an idea of what to do when we feel stressed or overwhelmed.
But what about others?

What if someone around you is feeling the same way — tired, anxious, or disconnected?
Would you know how to support them? Would you know what to say?

In today’s class, we’ll explore how to use English to give kind, supportive advice .

Because mental health matters, and so do your words.

Language Focus: Giving Suggestions

When we want to support someone, we can use these modal verbs and phrases in English to give advice in a clear and caring way:


Suggestion Language

  • Should

  • Must

  • Need to

  • Have to

  • It’s important to

  • Try to

  • Ought to 

  • Don’t forget to

  • It helps to


Examples in Context

  • You should talk to someone when you're feeling low.

  • We must take mental health seriously.

  • People need to rest, not just work.

  • You have to recognize your limits.

  • It’s important to check in with your emotions.

  • Try to spend less time on your phone before bed.

  • You ought to speak kindly to yourself.

  • Don’t forget to breathe and take breaks.

  • It helps to write down your feelings.


Your Task: Share Helpful Advice

Write 3–5 suggestions for someone who may be struggling with:

  • Stress

  • Anxiety

  • Burnout

  • Disconnection

  • Negative thinking

Use at least 4 different suggestion phrases from the list above.

You can write in a list, short paragraph, or even as a message to a friend.
